Turfsoil was founded in 1945 by the grandfather of the current Chairman. Originally confined to MOD sites we have expanded our activities over the years to take in all forms of grounds maintenance, with particular emphasis on high profile sites e.g. parks and playing fields, historic estates, business parks and cemeteries. While still retaining a considerable presence within the MOD Estate (RMA Sandhurst, Woolwich Garrison, USAF Mildenhall and other sites), we are major contractors to local authorities (Bexley, Bromley, Wandsworth, Medway etc) and to other public bodies (Royal Parks, English Heritage etc).

Our ‘flagship’ contract is that for Greenwich Park, where we have carried out all the horticultural and related services since the Royal Parks were privatised in 1992. Greenwich Park is to host the equestrian cross-country, and possibly other events at the 2012 Olympics.

We have a directly-employed staff of 200, a turnover of £6.5 million, our own purpose-built repair facilities and a stock of machinery valued at over £1 million.

As a by-product of our work in cemeteries, we have developed a specialist exhumation division. This is called upon by main contractors, local authorities and housing associations when major developments are planned that involve the exhuming and reinterment of human remains. This is a very sensitive area of operation, and our experienced staff are specially trained to undertake the works in a sympathetic manner with minimum distress to those affected.

Turfsoil has survived for over 60 years as a private company, in a very competitive market, by consistently delivering high-quality service through well-trained and long-serving staff. This principle is enshrined in our ISO 9001:2000 registration, and has been central to our winning numerous BALI and other National Awards for our work over the years.
